Global heating is a major threat to the oceans. The increasing temperature of the planet is leading to "changes in water temperature, ocean acidification and deoxygenation, leading to changes in oceanic circulation and chemistry, rising sea levels, increased storm intensity, as well as changes in the diversity and abundance of marine species", affirms the website of The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Here in Australia, we can get as an example The Great Barrier Reef. This so important ecosystem is about to reach a third mass bleaching event in five years due to climate change. Severe bleaching occurred in 2020 in all three sections of the reef. This is the first time this happens since mass bleaching was first seen in 1998.
According to The Guardian, "the Great Barrier Reef has experienced five mass bleaching events – 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017 and 2020 – all caused by rising ocean temperatures driven by global heating".
Coral reefs are directly affected by the warming waters. This is serious. Corals are imperative to the reproduction of many marine species, which in its turn is important to humans that depend on marine life to survive.
"My greatest fear is that people will lose hope for the reef. Without hope there’s no action", Dr David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, told Guardian Australia.
The more emotionally connected people feel towards the reefs - as well as the oceans and all marine ecosystems - the higher the chances of protecting it. And a powerful way of protecting the reefs and all life in the oceans is by decreasing our carbon emissions at the individual and collective levels. Another important step is to protect and regenerate marine ecosystems.
