Congratulations! If you are reading this, it means that you have already made a small effort to switch to the plastic-free life. It's super easy and it also will reduce your waste a lot. Take a Zero Waste life step by step, it may be challenging to give up your habits, just keep in mind your goal and don't give up! Today we will share 5 easy steps to kick off your eco-friendly adventure!

#### ![blog post eco](https://blog.weaction.online/hs-fs/hubfs/blog%20post%20eco.jpg?width=5616&name=blog%20post%20eco.jpg)

### Step 1 Carry reusable bags

It may take time to get used to having around your reusable bags but it's just a matter of time and effort.

> *I have two different types of bags that I will take with me in each grocery trip; 2-3 large bags for putting everything in and small cotton bags for bulk, fruits, and vegetables. This has helped me cut down on plastic waste by A LOT. I also tend to get bag credits for every single bag I use, even the little ones.*
> Andrea Coleman, writes[ about her Zero Waste living](https://splendidmoon.com)

### ![93104](https://blog.weaction.online/hs-fs/hubfs/93104.jpg?width=1200&name=93104.jpg) Step 2 Give up Bottled Water

According to National Geographic, around 17 million gallons of crude oil is used each year during the production of plastic bottles. Many plastic bottles never get recycled properly, meaning they contribute to landfills and pollution. Avoid this by purchasing plastic packaging as little as possible.

Solution: buy a reusable bottle and drink tap water (if it's okay in your country). Also, you can install a filtration system at home just to be sure you are drinking safe water.

### Step 3 Forget about Plastic Staws, buy yourself Glass or Stainless Steel Straw

Remember to mention that you don't want a straw while ordering drinks if the cafe or pub doesn't offer a reusable substitute.

Most plastic straws are too lightweight to make it through the mechanical recycling sorter. They drop through sorting screens and mix with other materials and are too small to separate, contaminating recycling loads or getting disposed as garbage.

### Step 4 Get your Fruits and Vegetables Unpackaged

Additionally, to avoiding plastic you will also save money. Precut and preprepared fruits and veggies may save a bit of time, but that convenience comes at a cost. The prices of the prepared vegetables range from 50 to 75 percent more; the increase goes toward paying for the factors that increase the products’ carbon footprints—handling, washing, transportation, refrigeration, and packaging

### Step 5 Shop at your Local Farmers Market

Farmers markets are a great way to buy fresh, local produce without plastic, as long as you remember to bring your own bags. It's a common practice in some countries but you may still be a pioneer at your local market. At first, people will stare at you but after a while, they will get used to it and who knows maybe will bring their own reusable shopping bags.
